VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS

The purpose of the Vessel Safety Check is to evaluate the safety equipment required on each vessel.   This check includes the vessel registration, display of numbers (correct mounting), fire extinguishers, flares, sound producing device, navigation lights, back fire flame arrester (inboard motors), as well as some of the recommended safety items.

Along with safety items, the Auxiliarist will discuss what the Coast Guard would like the boating public to look for in order to help them with their work.  If anything suspicious is spotted, boaters are urged to call an 800 number and report the incident as soon as possible.

The safety checks are free and any discrepancies are between the boat owner and the person completing the survey and no one else.

Vessel Safety Checks are usually available throughout the week at the John Zappia Base located at Alsdorf Park in Pompano Beach.  Other places and times may be scheduled by appointment.

For more information on how to schedule a vessel safety check, please contact ANTONIO VIANA, FSO-VE (Flotilla Staff Officer for Vessel Safety Checks.)
